Episode 22
Revelation 22 - The River, The Tree, and the Final Amen
This is it, not just the last chapter of Revelation, but the last word of the entire New Testament and the whole Bible. After walking through seven churches, seven seals, seven trumpets, seven bowls, two beasts, a great prostitute, a wedding, and a final battle, Revelation 22 brings the whole story home. Here’s what closes out this study before we start Genesis next week.
The river and the tree, restored. John sees the river of the water of life flowing from the throne, and the tree of life on either side of it, bearing fruit every month, its leaves for the healing of the nations. This is a direct echo of Genesis 2, where the river flows out of Eden and the tree of life stands in the garden. What sin took away has been given back, and this time it’s never threatened again.
No more curse. The curse from Genesis 3, spoken over the ground, over labor, over relationships, is finally lifted. God’s throne and the Lamb’s throne will be in the city itself, and his name will be on his people’s foreheads, the sealing language we’ve traced across this whole book, now completed.
A warning, and an open door. The angel tells John not to seal up the prophecy, a direct contrast to Daniel, who was told the opposite: seal it until the end. What was closed for Daniel’s generation is now open for John’s. And there’s a sober instruction alongside it: let the one doing wrong keep doing wrong, and let the righteous keep doing right. This book was never going to force anyone into repentance. It states the truth and lets it stand.
Alpha and Omega, one final time. Christ speaks and repeats his self-description from earlier in the book: the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last. Genesis opens with God creating everything from nothing. Revelation closes with that same God declaring himself the beginning and the end, still on the throne.
The last invitation in Scripture. “Let the one who is thirsty come. Let the one who desires take the water of life without price.” It’s addressed to every reader of every generation, including whoever is listening to this right now. The invitation was never closed.
The warning on the text itself. The book closes with a warning not to add to or take away from the prophecy, echoing similar warnings in Deuteronomy. It’s a guardrail on the integrity of God’s word that shows up at both the beginning and the end of the whole biblical canon.
What I’m sitting with as we close this study is the question the book itself leaves us with: what are we still thirsty for? What feels unfinished? Every promise in this book was kept. Every single one. And the invitation to come is still open.
